If there has been a soundtrack to my making art it has been the Tom Waits' songbook. For years his music would play in whatever studio I was working in. Whether it be designing zombie Teddy bears or painting a piece for an exhibition you were sure to hear Waits coming out of my headphones or studio window at all hours. The song "Long Way Home" is among my favorites. Not just because it was the first and last song played at my wedding but because it's the type of story I want to tell -
"Let's go out past the party lights
Where we can finally be alone
Come with me and we can take the long way home."
This comic first appeared in the annual Philly Zinefest zine in 2023. Below is the color comp I worked up for this piece. Originally it was going to be another painting but I chose pen and ink with a brush. Seemed kinda fitting. Dotcha' think? Thanks for stopping by.
