Being Blunt.

Years ago, more than I'd like to commit to this post, I was working at a booth at San Diego Comicon. One of the things I like to do when working a table is engage with folks. Being as I may or may not get away to see everything - we would usually talk about what amazing things they've seen and some of their awesome purchases. Before chatting with anyone, especially if there was a bit of a crowd, I would take a look at whatever the next person might be wearing or carrying with them. Again, this was one of my first major cons, I wanted to see and talk about everything.
On the second or third day of the con I noticed a dude wearing what I thought was an awesome baseball cap. I made a note of it so that when he approached I could ask him what it was and where he bought it. It was an image right up my alley, one that I wish I had designed. When he got closer we talked and the cap wasn't what I thought I saw, it was for some football team and I had just totally misread it.When he left I grabbed my little pocket sketchbook and drew what I thought I saw. (See image below.) I drew what would become Femur. This character has stuck with me for years, appearing in my sketchbooks, pen and ink pieces, and paintings. Until recently, I thought Femur might be a Children's book concept. But I think I found the character's true calling in single panel comics where I can pour in whatever I might be feeling at the time. The comic above is the very first painting I made of the character. As it states I'm not a fan of cartoons that smoke. But wanting to stay true to the character's origins I thought it fitting to start with this image. This comic first appeared in the annual Philly Zinefest zine in 2022 and would lead to more and more that I will be sharing on this site.
Thanks so much for stopping by.
Cheers,
Patch
